What Separates a Real Putting Green From a Decorative Turf Patch

A functional putting green requires three things most decorative turf installs skip: the right pile height, a base that enables contouring, and an infill density calibrated for consistent ball roll. Get any one of those wrong and you have an expensive-looking surface that doesn't putt true.

Pile Height and Turf Selection

Putting green turf is cut to 3/8 to 1/2 inch, approximately one-quarter the height of standard lawn turf. At that height, the ball rolls on the blade tips rather than nestling into the pile. The turf fiber must be a tightly curled or straight nylon or nylon/polyethylene blend specifically designed for golf use. Generic landscape turf at any height does not produce consistent roll. Base Contouring for Breaks

A flat putting surface is practice for approach putts only. Contoured greens with 1 to 3 inches of elevation change across the surface produce realistic breaks that match on-course conditions. Heat Performance in Tucson

Tucson's summer heat affects turf in two ways: surface temperature and fiber behavior.
