Why Pet Turf Requires Different Specs Than Standard Artificial Grass

Artificial turf marketed as "pet-friendly" covers a wide range of quality. In Tucson's climate, the wrong turf grade turns a dog area into an odor problem by midsummer. Three technical specifications separate pet turf from standard synthetic grass:

Drainage Rate and Backing Design

Pet turf backing has a higher perforation density than standard residential turf, typically designed to drain 30+ inches of water per hour. That sounds like more than enough, but with multiple large dogs using the same area in 110°F heat, drainage speed determines whether urine passes through quickly or sits on the surface. The base beneath also matters: we use compacted decomposed granite that stays permeable and doesn't compact into a drainage-blocking layer over time the way sand can.

Antimicrobial Infill, Not Silica Sand

Silica sand is the default infill in most budget installs. In moderate climates it's acceptable. In Tucson summers, it absorbs urine and bacteria, heats to extreme temperatures, and produces a powerful ammonia smell that gets worse as the day heats up. We use antimicrobial infill systems that resist bacterial growth, some use zeolite, others use specially coated crumb rubber or organic media. Face Weight and Blade Durability

Dog traffic is heavy and concentrated. We spec pet turf at 70 oz face weight minimum, heavier than the 50-60 oz residential turf common in landscaping installs. The denser blade construction handles constant paw traffic without matting and resists the digging behavior that can pull up lighter turf around edges. Blade height is also shorter than lawn turf: 1.5 to 1.75 inches is easier to rinse clean and doesn't harbor debris.

Heat Management in Tucson's Climate

Surface temperature is a safety issue, not just a comfort one. We use medium-green blade colors for all Tucson pet turf installs, they run measurably cooler than dark green under the same conditions.
